On the morning of Friday October 17th, the 9th Edition of the Bi-annual 3rd Grade Pirate Cup took place under overcast but comfortable conditions at the Grantsburg High School track. An audience comprised of fellow students and community members shuffled into the grandstands to see the fastest third grade girls and boys set off in a race for two laps around the 400-meter Olympic track.
First up was the boy’s race. Runners included: Jaxtin Guess, Logan Ciotta, Reed Kwolek, Tris Olson, Bentley Glover, Jordy Nelson, Connor Thill and Lyle Marhenke. The race started off with Jaxtin, Tris and Reed separating themselves from the pack out front. By the time they finished the first lap, Olson was the leader. At the beginning of the second lap, Tris opened up his lead a little bit, and Logan Ciottta moved into third place. As the race neared it’s completion, Jaxtin closed on Tris, but was unable to catch him. Tris Olson crossed the finish line as the winner, with Jaxtin and Logan rounding out the top three spots.
The girls were next, and the runners taking to the lanes were: Jossy Danielson, Addy Melin, Hannah Briggs, Bailey Lindus, Ellyana Zart, Tara Jones and Clarey Trestven. From the start, Danielson was the heavy favorite, as she had tied the school record a few weeks earlier. Jossy indeed made the race for the top spot anticlimactic, as she jumped out front and left no doubt as to who would be the winner. The race was for the runner up spot, and a dark horse emerged in Tara Jones. Jones had timed-in sixth quickest in preliminary action, but moved into second on the opening lap, and held that spot for the rest of the race. After holding down third early in the event, Trestven was caught and passed by Lindus who ended up third at the stripe. Danielson added the coveted Pirate Cup to her collection of trophies, as she bested the field by nearly thirty seconds.
Friendly competition and good-sportsmanship were on display for the crowd who showed up in a very vocal and strong showing of support. The tenth edition of the 3rd Grade Pirate Cup is slated to take place in May 2026.
