Mrs. Pomeroy's class has been having a great time exploring marble runs! Students have been investigating how different factors, such as the weight of the marble, the height of the ramp, and the distance traveled, affect the marble's movement. Through hands-on experimentation, they are making predictions, testing ideas, and discovering how these variables work together.

To wrap up the year, our second graders are combining their science engineering unit with their math marble run project! Using the engineering design process, students are testing whether marble mass, tube length, and tube height make a difference in their marble run results.

It has been fun to hear their thinking, predictions, problem-solving, and adjustments along the way.

In the Fall of 2025, third grade student Josslyn Danielson tied the Grantsburg Elementary School record for the 800 meter run. The old record was established in 2023 by Zoe Marhenke with a time of 3:20. Danielson isn’t one to rest on her laurels however. As we rounded the bases towards the end of the school year, and Danielson approached the end of her time at Grantsburg Elementary, she broke the record three times. Once during practice, again during Fitness Testing, and finally at the Pirate Cup, where she etched her name up on the record board with a time of 3:11. Congrats Jossy!

On the morning of Thursday May 21st, the 10th Edition of the Bi-annual 3rd Grade Pirate Cup took place under sunny and near-perfect conditions at the Grantsburg High School track. A very nice crowd gathered in the football grandstands, as the Pirate community came out in droves to support the event. The fastest third grade girls and boys set off in a race for two laps around the high school track.

First up were the boys, and the participants included: Jaxtin Guess, Lucas Dickson, Logan Ciotta, Manny Rios Sichaca, Lyle Marhenke, Jordy Nelson, Connor Thill and Crosby Judd. At the start, Jaxtin, Logan and Lyle moved to the front of the pack. As lap one reached the half-way point, Marhenke started to pull away from the field. From there, this race was dominated by Marhenke, who set a personal record coming home with a time of 3:10. Rounding out the top-5 was runner up Ciotta, followed by Judd, Rios Sichaca and Guess. The school record continues to be held by Bennett Vilstrup, who ran a 2:57 in 2022.

The girls were next, and the runners taking to the lanes were: Jossy Danielson, Isabella Mattson, Ellyana Zart, Bailey Lindus, Hannah Briggs, Clarey Trestven, Valerie Wicklund and Brynlee Erickson. Jossy was the heavy favorite in this one, and the current school record holder showed why. The race started with a conservative pace set up front by Jossy, Isabella and Ellyanna. Much like the boy’s race, the winner, Danielson, made it obvious she was on a mission this day, as she handily won the race, and shattered her own school record in the process with a time of 3:11. Following Danielson to the stripe were: Mattson, Briggs, Lindus and a tie for fifth between Erickson and Wicklund.

Camaraderie and good-sportsmanship were on display for the bleachers full of fellow GES students, staff. and parents who had a strong showing of support. The eleventh edition of the 3rd Grade Pirate Cup is slated to take place in September 2026.

Our 4th grade students enjoyed lunch outside to celebrate the beautiful weather and the excitement of the school year winding down. ☀️

There is something special about sunshine, fresh air, laughter with friends, and making memories together as we head into the final weeks of school. These moments remind us how important it is to slow down, enjoy the little things, and celebrate all the hard work this group has put in throughout the year.

We’re soaking up every moment together before summer begins! 🤗
