On the morning of Thursday, May 23rd, the 8th Edition of the Bi-annual 3rd Grade Pirate Cup took place under sunny and near-perfect conditions at the Grantsburg High School track. A record-setting crowd tested the seating capacity of the football grandstands, as the community came out in droves to support the event. The fastest third grade girls and boys set off in a race for two laps around the quarter-mile synthetic oval.
First up was the female competitors. Runners included: Zoe Marhenke, Josie Meyer, Marley Palmquist, Izzy Peterson, Aria Seume, Mari Luedtke, Katelyn Olson and Elena Quin. Josie Meyer flashed to front of the pack, and crossed the stripe first to lead lap one. Current school-record holder Marhenke followed Meyer in second place. Seume and Palmquist waged a side-by-side battle for third. On the second lap, Meyer looked like she might pull away, but soon Palmquist picked up her pace and started to run down the leader. Marley seemed to find a second gear down the back chute, and quickly reeled in Meyer entering turn three. They raced in close proximity out of the final corner with Palmquist taking a narrow victory in a thrilling race that had the crowd on their feet. Marhenke ended up a strong third with Izzy Peterson close behind.
The boys were next, and the runners taking to the lanes were: Olen Chell, Wyan Polzine, Gideon Kaiser, Zack Schmidt, Luis Ayohua-Hernandez, Gabe Tyberg, Daniel Hoefs and Elliott Christians. At the start, Chell, Schmidt and Polzine set a rapid pace on the first lap, as Chell looked to make it a Pirate Cup sweep during his third grade career. He did just that, as he started to gap the field on the second lap, showing why he was the favorite in the week entering the event. He won his second trophy in dominating fashion, with Kaiser nipping Schmidt in the final few meters for third at the conclusion of the race.
Friendly competition and good sportsmanship were on display for the bleachers full of fellow Grantsburg students and parents who came to show their support. The ninth edition of the 3rd Grade Pirate Cup is slated to take place in September 2024.

Using the data gathered on height, marble mass, and tube length in the 2nd-grade marble unit, students worked on hitting the marble challenge targets.

Thank you to the representatives from 40 local organizations, businesses, and post-secondary schools who gifted their time and resources to our students during the 2024 GHS Career Expo on Wedensday, May 1.
Students had the opportunity to explore diverse career paths, branches of the military, and local education prospects in the Grantsburg area by visiting resource tables. As students visited each station, representatives stamped their ‘passport’ booklet in exchange for thoughtful questions or comments about opportunities within their organization.
Thank you to everyone who made this event memorable!

First-grade student Josslyn Danielson recently broke the Grantsburg Elementary school record for the ½ mile run during spring Physical Education fitness testing. The old record stood for 363 days after it was set in May of 2023 by Aubrielle Bohn with a time of 3:48. Danielson broke Bohn’s record by two seconds. Congrats Jossy!

GSD wants to thank @Burnett Medical Center for offering our student-athletes free physical exams again this year!
By assessing students’ physical condition, doctors can recommend specific exercises, stretches, or precautions tailored to their needs, which can help prevent sports-related injuries. Exams are also required by our district policies and WIAA participation requirements.
Thank you, BMC, for making these accessible, convenient, and free for families!
