After a two week delay due to inclement weather, the tenth edition of the Bi-annual 3rd Grade Pirate Cup took place under overcast, but comfortable, conditions at the Grantsburg High School track. A record-setting crowd was on hand, as the community came out in droves in a strong showing of support for the crown jewel event of third grade athletics. A very popular addition to the event this spring was an appearance by the Grantsburg High School band, who welcomed attendees with music and kicked-off opening ceremonies with the National Anthem. With the anthem in the books, it was now time for the fastest third grade girls and boys to set off in a race for two laps around the quarter-mile track.
First up was the girls. Runners included: Macy Bistram, Aubrielle Bohn, Alayna Michaels, Audrey Zambrano, Evelynn Lener, Dakota Kackman and Jian Corrigan. Hallie Vilstrup timed-in with Bistram as the fastest runners in qualifying races, but was sidelined from this event as she was on the mend from a recent appendectomy. Defending Girls Champion Kackman opened up the Pirate Cup as the early leader, with Bistram and Bohn giving chase as the top-three separated themselves from the rest of the pack. The top-three runners remained the same on lap two, but things got interesting on the homestretch, as Bistram tracked-down Kackman and the two raced shoulder to shoulder for a photo finish at the stripe. The judges conferred and determined the race was too close to call, so both Bistram and Kackman were awarded the coveted Pirate Cup trophies. Both girls came close to beating the school record for the 800 meter run, coming up just five seconds shy of setting a new mark.
The boys were next, and the runners taking to the lanes were: Blake Thoreson, Max Carey, Alex Rombach, Jack Chute, Aiden Dunbar, Kayden Schmidt, Liam Ward, and James Denn. Defending Champion Thoreson was the favorite from lane number one, but it was Carey who jumped into the lead early, with Thoreson in tow. There was a gap between the lead duo, and the other boys raced in a pack led by Rombach. As the race progressed, Thoreson was able to pull into the lead, which he extended at the end to take home his second Pirate Cup of the school year. Thoreson would finish a scant three seconds away from breaking Bennett Vilstrup’s school record of 2:57. Carey wound up in the runner-up spot, followed by Rombach, Dunbar and Ward, who rounded out the top-five.
Friendly competition and good-sportsmanship were on display for the bleachers full of fellow GSD students and parents. The 11th edition of the 3rd Grade Pirate Cup is slated to take place in September 2025.

Chemistry 2 students recently analyzed chloride ion concentrations in various water samples using titration. By carefully measuring how much silver nitrate was required to react with the chloride, they were able to determine and compare the levels present in each sample.🧪
The lab experience reinforced key analytical techniques and highlighted the importance of water quality testing!
