After reading stories about characters who are the size of a thumb, first graders in Mrs. Anderson’s class spent time creating the flower where Thumbelina lived and painting with their thumbs! These stories taught us that even though we are small, we can do BIG things!

Did you know? Your brain is still developing into your mid-20s! Substance abuse can interfere with the development of critical areas, particularly those responsible for decision-making, learning, and emotional regulation.
This is why it’s so important for teens and young adults to avoid drugs and alcohol.
During Red Ribbon Week, join us as we dedicate ourselves to living drug free! 🙌

On the morning of Wednesday, October 9th, the Ninth Edition of the Bi-annual 3rd Grade Pirate Cup took place under sunny and near-perfect conditions at the Grantsburg High School track. A record-setting crowd was on hand, as the community came out in a strong showing of support for the crown jewel event of third-grade athletics. The fastest third-grade girls and boys set off in a race for two laps around the quarter-mile track.
First up was the boys. Runners included: Blake Thoreson, Max Carey, Alex Rombach, Jack Chute, Liam Ward, Lucious Lightfeather, Oliver Frevel, and James Denn. Thoreson was the favorite from lane number one, and he quickly proved why, as he separated himself from the field early down the back chute on lap one. The trio of Carey Lightfeather and Rombach ran in a pack in their battle for second in the early part of the race. Blake continued to run by himself on the second lap, and he crossed the stripe first with a time of 3:04. He finished within striking distance of Bennett Vilstrup’s 2022 school record of 2:57, a mark he will have his eyes on in the spring. Carey narrowly won a spirited battle for the runner-up spot about one foot in front of Rombach, with Chute and Denn rounding out the top five.
The ladies were next and the runners taking to the lanes were: Hallie Vilstrup, Aubrielle Bohn, Dakota Kackman, Macy Bistram, JJ Trenter, Alayna Michaels, Audrey Zambrano, and Evelynn Lener. Kackman and Michaels ran within close proximity of each other early in this one, as they put considerable distance on the other six girls who ran in tight formation. On the final lap, Kackman continued a strong pace up front, and she went on to win the race from lane number three. The best battle on the track was for second, as good friends Bistram and Vilstrup pushed each other as they started to close the distance on Kackman on lap two. Macy edged Hallie this time, and the rest of the girls came to the finish line with the leaders cheering them on as they finished their race.
Friendly competition and good sportsmanship were on display for the bleachers full of fellow GSD students and parents. The 10th edition of the 3rd Grade Pirate Cup is slated to take place in May 2025.

There will be NO SCHOOL for students on Friday, October 11. This is an inservice day for our teachers and staff.

The Wisconsin Association of School Boards has designated Oct. 6-12 as WISCONSIN SCHOOL BOARD APPRECIATION WEEK- a time to raise awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education pays in our communities. Grantsburg School District recognizes the important work our school board members do for us all year long. Even though we make a special effort in October, their contributions are year-round commitments. Thank-you to Dave Dahlberg, President; Brian Handy, Vice-President; Renae Rombach, Clerk; Liz Shultz, Treasurer; Jason Burkman, Director; Peter Denn, Director; and Colleen Lade, Director for your collective 47+ years of commitment to our schools!

Addy Blume from Mrs Stomberg’s class broke Jossy Danielson’s school record for the 1/2 mile run by 9 seconds. She ran a 3:37

Our 1st graders have been learning all about the human body. As part of their unit, they also learned about germs! Mrs. Stomberg's class used glitter to demonstrate how quickly germs can spread! Then they practiced the hand washing techniques in their lesson to remove all those glittery "germs"!

We’re looking forward to the Dollars for Scholars Supper, happening Friday, October 4. Join us from 4:30 to 7:00pm at Grantsburg Middle School.
