From Coach Pete Johnson:
“PIRATES” purple baseball jacket - $65 or $70
Ball cap - $15 for players
Let Coach Pete know soon by email or text if you would like to buy a jacket or cap.
I will provide you with game jersey, pants, and socks. You must buy your own sleeves to be worn under your uniform in cold weather games. Our game undershirts will be purple -- both long sleeves and short.
Check now to see if your cleats from last year still fit.
Buy batting gloves before our first practice. We will take many swings every day, and blisters are common.
The middle school gym is open on Sunday nights if you’d like to come in to throw and hit for a little while pre-season.
Ball players are my favorite people at GHS. I will put in a lot of hours outside of practices and games. These extra hours are for you. Make sure you put in the extra hours for yourself and for me…these are hours spent doing your classwork, treating people right, and behaving yourself. We have more than 20 games on our schedule and I want you eligible for all of them. Start now by keeping up with your classes.
I want ball players to be the guys in school that are admired for being friendly to everyone. I want ballplayers to be the guys that people can count on. I want ballplayers to be the guys that elementary and middle school boys want to become. You are all capable of being this ballplayer that I expect.
Prior to the first day of practice, it is very important to prepare.
THROW! We do a lot of drill work and throwing the first 2 weeks of practice. If you
don’t pick up a ball until the first day, your arm will be stiff the second day, and will
be very sore the third, fourth, and fifth days. I hope there will be a few warmer days
closer to our start, where you can go outside and play catch. Until then, find a T-ball
and play catch in the gym some night when there’s nothing going on.
Do your school work! Don't violate our school's policies. There are around three dozen teammates and four coaches counting on you to be part of our team.
YOU ARE PART OF PIRATE BASEBALL!
Playing ball for Grantsburg should be an honor for you. We have very good facilities, many great fans, dedicated coaches, and a long history of playing ball the right way. PIRATE BALL has been successful for years. Now is your time to be a part of it!
MAKE A DIFFERENCE OFF OF THE DIAMOND!
I count on each of you to be the guy other people can rely on. Take time to say a kind word to other people, or just say hi...no matter who you meet. Your honor is important to me...make it important to yourself by acting honorable. Admit mistakes--don't make excuses. Help people in need--not just friends. Build people up with good words--don't tear them down with gossip or hateful talk. You are a son--show your parents respect and gratitude. Give some time to younger kids in town. They look up to you, and your kind words are huge to them.
MAKE YOURSELF A BETTER BALL PLAYER!
Give full effort during practice. Do each drill as hard as you can until the last ball. Take coaching advice to try to improve technique. Visualize...imagine a good catch, the perfect throw, a line drive hit, before sleep every night. If you see it in your head, it is much easier to make it happen on the field.
DISPLAY CLASS WHILE IN UNIFORM!
You are a Pirate ballplayer when you pull on your uniform. When you are in uniform, your cap should be on frontward, your jersey tucked in, and black will be the color of your varsity undershirt, purple for JV. You will take pre-game ins and outs with full effort, you will not joke around during ins and outs, and as always (in all of our games and practices), you will hustle from one spot to the next. We, as coaches, are disappointed to play against some other teams who don't show this respect for the game.
WE WILL PLAY A LOT OF INNINGS THIS SPRING--weather permitting.
You are important to me and to our team.
USE OF MIDDLE SCHOOL GYM:
The AD set up an alternating schedule with the fastpitch team to practice early or late in the middle school gym. Since girls softball begins the week before us, they will be early first then late when it is our first week of practice, and so on.
Once the weather is acceptable, we will practice outdoors. Whenever weather is not suitable for outdoor practice, we will follow the pre-arranged schedule to use the middle school gym. There may be bad weather days that we are scheduled for a late practice that we will POSSIBLY be able to use the high school gym and have an early practice. This will be communicated as effectively as possible.
Players should be prepared with proper attire for indoors or outdoors, including both cleats and gym shoes for each practice. Always have warm sleeves on hand. The weather conditions at the fields are usually much colder than the rest of the town.
